Alan Sugar is a well-known British businessman and a famous face on television. He was born on 24 March 1947 in Hackney, which is in East London. His father worked as a tailor in the garment industry. Growing up, Sugar lived in a council flat with his family. Because of his very curly hair, people gave him the nickname "Mop head." He worked at a greengrocer to earn extra money while he was young.

In 1968, at the age of 21, Sugar started a company called Amstrad. He used £100 from his Post Office savings to begin this journey. At first, he sold radio aerials for cars out of a small van. The name Amstrad came from his initials and the first four letters of the word "trading." His company grew by making electronics like audio amplifiers and radio tuners. He found ways to make products cheaper by using injection moulding plastics. This helped him sell more items than his competitors.

Amstrad became very successful during the 1980s. In 1984, the company launched the Amstrad CPC 464, which was an 8-bit computer. This machine was quite popular and three million units were sold worldwide. Later, in 1985, he released the PCW 8256 word processor. This machine was much cheaper than the Apple Macintosh Plus. However, the 1990s were a hard time for the company. Some business computers had unreliable hard disks, which hurt the company's reputation. Eventually, BSkyB bought Amstrad for about £125 million in 2007.

Sugar also spent many years involved in professional football. From 1991 to 2001, he was the chairman of Tottenham Hotspur Football Club. He teamed up with manager Terry Venables to buy the club. During his nine years as chairman, the team won one trophy, the 1999 League Cup. He also helped finance the transfers of famous players like Jürgen Klinsmann. Sugar eventually sold his remaining shares in the club in 2007 for £25 million. He later gave £3 million from that sale to help the Hackney Empire.

He watches them compete in business tasks to see who is the best. In the past, the winner got a job at his company. Now, winners receive a partnership and £250,000 to start a business. Sugar has also hosted a similar show in Australia. In 2015, he became a billionaire, and his wealth was estimated at £1.21bn in 2021.
