life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The umbrella thorn acacia is a very special tree. It is known by the scientific name Vachellia tortilis. This tree is native to most of Africa. It grows in the savanna and the Sahel. You can also find it in the Middle East.

It is a very important plant for the land. It helps fix nitrogen in the soil. Nitrogen is a nutrient that plants need to grow. The tree does this with help from tiny bacteria in its roots. This process helps make dry land better for other living things.

This tree has many unique parts. It can grow into a large tree with a wide top. In very dry places, it might only be a small bush. The leaves have many small leaflets on them. The most interesting part is the thorns. The tree has two different kinds of thorns. One is long, pale, and straight. The second thorn is short, dark, and curved.

The tree also has small white flowers. These flowers have a very strong smell. The seeds grow in pods that look like coiled springs.

People have used this tree for a long time. In Tanzania, people use the bark to make string. The tree also produces gum called gum arabic. This gum is safe to eat. Many people use the roots, shoots, and pods for medicine. They also use them to make tools and decorations. The wood is very strong too. It is used to make wagon wheels and fence posts. It can even be used to make furniture and cages.

This tree is found in many different countries. It grows in Tunisia, Morocco, and Uganda. You can also find it in Angola, Zimbabwe, Djibouti, and Botswana. It likes places with high heat. It can live in sandy or stony soil. The tree can even survive sandblasting from the wind. It can also handle very salty soil. Plants older than two years can even handle frost.

This tree also has a big place in history. In the Bible, Israelites used this wood for the tabernacle. They used it to build the Ark of the Covenant. The tree is also mentioned in the Quran. A historic pledge called the pledge of allegiance of Hudaybiya happened under this tree. An old Arabian name for this tree was Samurathe. It is amazing how one tree can be so useful.
