A V sign is a hand gesture made with two fingers. You raise your index and middle fingers to form a V shape. The other fingers stay clenched in a fist. This simple movement can mean many different things. The meaning depends on how you hold your hand. It can show victory, peace, or even a rude insult.

How you point your palm changes everything. If your palm faces outward, it is often a sign of victory. This is also called a "V for Victory" sign. During the 1960s, people used this same palm-outward sign for peace. They called it the peace sign. It became a symbol for many groups around the world.

However, you must be careful with your hand position. If your palm faces inward toward you, it is an insult. In places like Great Britain, Ireland, and Australia, this is very rude. Some people call this the "two-fingered salute." It can show that a person feels contempt or anger. Even leaders have made mistakes with this sign. In 1992, George H. W. Bush accidentally gave this rude sign in Australia.

The victory version became famous during World War II. In January 1941, a man named Victor de Laveleye suggested it. He was a Belgian politician living in exile. He used a radio speech to suggest it as a symbol of unity. He meant "V" for victory in French and freedom in Dutch. Winston Churchill helped make this gesture known to the whole world.

This gesture also appears in other ways, like in sign language. In American Sign Language, the V shape can mean the number 2. It can also mean the word "to look." Some people use it to mean "I am watching you." It is amazing how one hand shape can say so much. It all depends on the person and the place.
