Most bears can crossbreed. This includes black bears, grizzly bears, and polar bears. These bears belong to a group called Ursus. The giant panda is not in this group. Because of this, pandas likely cannot make hybrids.

Scientists found that genes can move between bear species. This is called introgression. It means DNA from one kind of bear mixes with another. For example, brown bears and polar bears have mixed in the past. Some of these hybrid bears can have their own babies. This shows that the bears are very closely related.

In 2006, a special bear was found on Banks Island. It was a mix of a polar bear and a grizzly bear.

People gave it many names. Some called it a "grolar" or a "pizzly." It had long claws and brown spots in its white fur. It also had dark rings around its eyes. This was the first time people recorded such a mix in the wild. Some think more hybrids might appear as the world gets warmer.
