The University of Indonesia is a top school in Indonesia. Most of it is in a city called Depok.

After Indonesia gained independence, the university grew. It officially became Universitas Indonesia on February 2, 1950.

The University of Indonesia is a very famous school in Indonesia.

Learning at the university happens in many different ways. Students can study many subjects like law, medicine, or engineering.

The history of the school started a very long time ago. It began on January 2, 1849, as a small school for health.
After Indonesia became independent, the university grew into what it is today. A group called BPTRI was formed in August 1945.
The university uses a special symbol called a kala-makara for its logo. This logo was created by a student named Sumaxtono in 1952. The symbol shows two kinds of energy from nature. Kala is the energy from the sun above. Makara is the energy from the Earth below. When these two meet, they create a source of knowledge. This logo helps people recognize the university and its goal to help science grow.
The University of Indonesia, often called UI, is a premier public university in Indonesia.
The university's origins began as a medical training program. On January 2, 1849, the School of Health Sciences and Vaccines was established. This occurred through a decree from the Governor of the Dutch East Indies. Initially, the school trained medical assistants through a two-year program. Graduates received the title of Javanese Doctor, or Dokter Jawa. They were only permitted to practice medicine within the Dutch East Indies. Over time, the curriculum became much more advanced. By 1875, the program lasted seven years and awarded the degree of Medical Doctor.
In 1898, the government created a new medical school called STOVIA. This name stands for School tot Opleiding van Inlandsche Artsen. The school opened a building in March 1902. This site is now known as the Museum of National Awakening.
Following Indonesia's independence, the university underwent several structural changes. On August 19, 1945, the Indonesian Institute for Higher Education, or BPTRI, was formed.
Originally, UI was a multi-campus university spread across many regions. It had campuses in Jakarta, Bogor, Bandung, Surabaya, and Makassar. Over the following decades, many of these branches became independent institutions. For example, the Surabaya campus became the University of Airlangga in 1954. The Makassar campus became the University of Hasanuddin in 1955. In 1959, the Bandung campus became the Bandung Institute of Technology. By 1965, the university had consolidated into three main campuses in Jakarta. These were located in Salemba, Rawamangun, and Pegangsaan. In 1987, most faculties moved to the large Depok campus.
The Depok campus is the primary site for most modern university activities. It houses many departments, including Engineering, Psychology, and Mathematics.
The university's identity is represented by its unique logo. Created in 1952 by a student named Sumaxtono, the logo features the kala-makara.
Today, Universitas Indonesia remains a leader in technology and research. In 2008, it won an award for being a "smart campus." This was due to its advanced IT infrastructure and internet connectivity. The university has also seen significant financial growth in recent years. Between 2007 and 2008, revenue increased from 800 billion to 1.6 trillion rupiah. This growth supports more research and a larger endowment fund. UI continues to improve its international collaborations and academic standing. It remains a vital institution for the future of Indonesia.
