The history of the school started a very long time ago. It began on January 2, 1849, as a small school for health.
At first, it only trained people to be medical assistants. Later, a school called STOVIA was started to train doctors. Many students from STOVIA helped Indonesia work toward becoming an independent nation. This shows how much the school has changed over many years.
After Indonesia became independent, the university grew into what it is today. A group called BPTRI was formed in August 1945.
Later, the school officially became Universitas Indonesia on February 2, 1950. This date is now celebrated as the university's birthday. In the beginning, the school had campuses in many different cities. These included Jakarta, Bogor, Bandung, Surabaya, and Makassar. Over time, some of these campuses became their own separate universities.
The university uses a special symbol called a kala-makara for its logo.
This logo was created by a student named Sumaxtono in 1952. The symbol shows two kinds of energy from nature. Kala is the energy from the sun above. Makara is the energy from the Earth below. When these two meet, they create a source of knowledge. This logo helps people recognize the university and its goal to help science grow.
The University of Indonesia, often called UI, is a premier public university in Indonesia.
It is widely recognized as one of the nation's most prestigious institutions. UI is currently ranked as the top university in Indonesia. In the 2024 QS World Universities Ranking, it held the 237th spot globally. This ranking also places it 49th within Asia. The university serves as a major center for higher education and research. Its main campus is located in the city of Depok, West Java.
The university's origins began as a medical training program. On January 2, 1849, the School of Health Sciences and Vaccines was established. This occurred through a decree from the Governor of the Dutch East Indies. Initially, the school trained medical assistants through a two-year program. Graduates received the title of Javanese Doctor, or Dokter Jawa. They were only permitted to practice medicine within the Dutch East Indies. Over time, the curriculum became much more advanced. By 1875, the program lasted seven years and awarded the degree of Medical Doctor.
In 1898, the government created a new medical school called STOVIA. This name stands for School tot Opleiding van Inlandsche Artsen. The school opened a building in March 1902. This site is now known as the Museum of National Awakening.
STOVIA education lasted nine years in total. It combined junior high, high school, and diploma-level training. Many STOVIA graduates later became leaders in Indonesia's movement for independence. In 1924, the Rechts Hogeschool, or RHS, was opened to train civilian officers. This institution eventually evolved into the university's Faculty of Law.
Following Indonesia's independence, the university underwent several structural changes. On August 19, 1945, the Indonesian Institute for Higher Education, or BPTRI, was formed.
It consisted of a College of Medicine and a College of Law and Letters. Prof dr Sarwono Prawirohardjo served as the chairman of BPTRI. When the Dutch colonial army occupied Jakarta in late 1945, BPTRI moved to several different cities. These locations included Klaten, Surakarta, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, and Malang. In 1947, the name was changed to Universiteit van Indonesië. Finally, on February 2, 1950, the modern Universitas Indonesia was officially established. This date is celebrated as the university's birthday.
Originally, UI was a multi-campus university spread across many regions. It had campuses in Jakarta, Bogor, Bandung, Surabaya, and Makassar. Over the following decades, many of these branches became independent institutions. For example, the Surabaya campus became the University of Airlangga in 1954. The Makassar campus became the University of Hasanuddin in 1955. In 1959, the Bandung campus became the Bandung Institute of Technology. By 1965, the university had consolidated into three main campuses in Jakarta. These were located in Salemba, Rawamangun, and Pegangsaan. In 1987, most faculties moved to the large Depok campus.
The Depok campus is the primary site for most modern university activities. It houses many departments, including Engineering, Psychology, and Mathematics.
A major feature is the central library, known as the "Crystal of Knowledge." This building covers 30,000 square meters and has eight floors. It was designed as a sustainable building using solar energy. The library can hold between 3 and 5 million book titles. It is also capable of accommodating 10,000 visitors at once. This facility provides essential resources for the entire academic community.
The university's identity is represented by its unique logo. Created in 1952 by a student named Sumaxtono, the logo features the kala-makara.
This symbol represents two sources of natural energy. Kala represents the energy from the sun above. Makara represents the energy from the Earth below. Together, they symbolize the university as a source of knowledge. The logo also includes a tree to represent growing science. The branches and buds signify that new scientific discoveries will always flourish. Each faculty uses a specific color within this design to show its identity.
Today, Universitas Indonesia remains a leader in technology and research. In 2008, it won an award for being a "smart campus." This was due to its advanced IT infrastructure and internet connectivity. The university has also seen significant financial growth in recent years. Between 2007 and 2008, revenue increased from 800 billion to 1.6 trillion rupiah. This growth supports more research and a larger endowment fund. UI continues to improve its international collaborations and academic standing. It remains a vital institution for the future of Indonesia.
