The other part is the House of Representatives. Together, they make laws for the country. The Senate is often called the upper house. Its rules come from the U.S. Constitution. This document has been used since 1789.

Each of the 50 states has two senators. This means there are 100 senators in total.

Senators serve six-year terms. These terms are staggered so they do not all end at once. Long ago, state legislatures chose the senators. Since 1913, the people have voted for them directly.

The Senate has many special jobs. They must approve treaties with other nations. They also vote on people the president picks for big jobs. This includes judges and leaders of the Cabinet.

The Senate also holds trials if the House impeaches an official. This helps keep a check on the government's power. The Vice President of the United States helps lead the Senate. They can only vote if the Senate is tied.
