The United States Senate is a very important part of the U.S. Congress.

It is known as the upper house of the government. The Senate works alongside the House of Representatives to make federal laws. Together, these two groups can pass or defeat new rules for the country. The Senate also helps balance the power of other parts of the government. This system of checks and balances is written in the U.S. Constitution. This founding document has guided the nation since March 4, 1789.

The Senate has several unique jobs that the House does not do. One major task is to give advice and consent to the president. This means the Senate must approve many people the president chooses for big roles. These roles include Cabinet secretaries and Supreme Court justices.

The Senate also must approve treaties made with other countries. If a person is impeached by the House, the Senate holds the trial. They decide if that official should be removed from their job. This process helps ensure that leaders follow the law.

Creating the Senate was a big debate for the founders of the country. They argued a lot about how many people each state should have. Some small states were worried about losing power to large states. In 1787, they reached a deal called the Connecticut Compromise. This deal said that every state would have the same number of senators. This was decided by a very close vote of 5 to 4.

This rule made sure that small states had an equal voice.

Today, the Senate is made up of exactly 100 members. Each of the 50 states sends two senators to Washington, D.C.

Senators serve for six years at a time. Their terms are staggered so the whole group does not change at once. Long ago, state legislatures chose the senators instead of the people. This changed in 1913 after the Seventeenth Amendment was passed. Now, the people in each state vote for their senators directly.

The Senate has a special way of working that is different from the House. It is often seen as a more calm and prestigious group. This is partly because senators serve longer terms and represent entire states. The Vice President of the United States also plays a role here. Even though they are not a senator, they act as the president of the Senate. The Vice President can only cast a vote if the Senate is tied.
