This work helps children stay safe and healthy in many places.

UNICEF works by setting up offices in many different areas. Most of their work happens in the field with local people. They have 150 country offices to help them reach kids. They also have seven regional offices to give expert advice. These regional offices are in places like Kenya, Thailand, and Jordan.

There are also 34 national committees that help raise money. These committees work with local governments to make plans. This way, the help fits what each community needs most.

This group has a very interesting history. It started on December 11, 1946, in New York City. At first, it was called the International Children's Emergency Fund. It was made to help mothers and children after World War II. A man named Ludwik Rajchman helped suggest the idea for a health service. He worked with leaders like Maurice Pate to start the group.

In 1953, it became a permanent part of the United Nations. The name changed to the United Nations Children's Fund. People still use the short name, UNICEF.

UNICEF relies on gifts of money to do its work. They do not get money from taxes or sales. Instead, governments and private people choose to give money. In 2024, the total income was $8.61 billion. About $4.92 billion of that came from public partners.

A 36-member board of government leaders makes the big decisions. They approve the plans and look after the money. This helps ensure the gifts are used the right way.

Many famous things have helped people learn about UNICEF. In 2006, the soccer team FC Barcelona started a special deal. They wore the UNICEF logo on their yellow jerseys. This was the first time a sports team helped a charity this way.
