The uneven bars are a famous tool used in women's artistic gymnastics.

These bars are set at different heights and widths. This design lets gymnasts swing and move from one bar to the other. A gymnast must use great strength and skill to perform a routine. These routines are made of many different moves called skills. Each skill has a specific value for the score.

Gymnasts often use white chalk on their hands. This helps them grip the bars so they do not slip.

To use the bars, a gymnast must first mount the apparatus. They might use a simple move or a difficult one to start. Some gymnasts even use a springboard to jump onto the bars. Once they start, the coach cannot touch them to help. However, the coach can stand on the mat during big release moves. If a gymnast falls, they have 30 seconds to get back up. They can use this time to fix their grips or add more chalk.

This sport has changed a lot over many years. Long ago, the bars were just men's parallel bars set at different heights. In the 1950s, routines were very simple with basic circles and holds. By the late 1950s, gymnasts began to move more fluidly. They started doing wraps and beats on the bars. In the late 1960s, companies began making the uneven bars as their own special tool. New designs used tension cables to hold the frame to the floor. This allowed coaches to move the bars much farther apart.

Famous gymnasts have changed the sport with their amazing moves. Olga Korbut performed the first high bar salto release move in 1972. This move is called the Korbut Flip. Later, Nadia Comaneci performed the Comaneci salto at the 1976 Olympics in Montreal. As moves became harder, the bars were moved even further apart. This extra space was needed for complex moves like the Pak salto. Today, elite gymnasts must follow strict rules for how far apart the bars are.

Learning these skills is a big job that requires safety. Many gyms put the bars over soft mats or foam pits. This helps gymnasts stay safe while they practice new things. Judges watch the routine to give a score. They look at how hard the moves are and how well they are done. If a gymnast falls, they lose points. In 2009, a fall resulted in a one-point deduction.
