He was born in Osaka to a mother who worked as a prostitute. A wealthy merchant adopted him when he was four. This merchant gave him a good education. As a child, Akinari became very sick with smallpox. He survived, but his fingers were deformed. He believed a god at the Kashima Inari Shrine saved him. This belief in the supernatural stayed with him forever.

Akinari's career changed many times. He first ran an oil and paper business. He did not enjoy being a merchant. A fire destroyed the family business after ten years. He used this as a chance to study medicine. He learned from a teacher who also taught him about Chinese stories. In 1776, he began practicing medicine. That same year, he published his most famous book.

These stories are different because they do not have ghosts. One story, called Hankai, is about a man who becomes a monk. Later in life, Akinari lost his sight for a while. He had to speak his words for others to write down.
