He was a painter, a sculptor, and a teacher. He was a key part of modern art in his country. As a young student, he helped start the Zaria Art Society. This group was made of young artists in 1958. They wanted to use their own ideas. They did not want to just use European styles.

Okeke loved the art of the Igbo people. He used a style called Uli drawing. Uli is a way to make things beautiful. In his culture, women often paint these patterns on bodies. They also paint them on walls. These designs come from nature. They use shapes from plants and animals. For example, they might use patterns from a jaguar. Artists make the ink from plant pods.

Okeke used these old patterns in his new art. He also taught many students at a university. He changed how they learned art. He wanted them to focus on African designs. He also started the Asele Institute to keep art safe. His work helped change how the world sees African art.
