During World War I, Germany used submarines called U-boats.

These boats fought to stop trade. Germany and Britain both needed ships. They used ships to bring in food and supplies.

At first, U-boats attacked warships. They tried to sink the big British fleet. Later, Germany changed its plan. They began a war on commerce. This meant they attacked merchant ships. These ships carried goods instead of weapons.

In 1915, a large ship called the Lusitania was hit.

A U-boat used a torpedo to sink it. Many people died in this attack. This made the United States very angry. The U.S. leader, Woodrow Wilson, told Germany to stop. He said Americans had a right to travel safely.

Germany sank many ships during the war. They sank almost 5,000 ships in total. This caused many people to lose their lives. To stay safe, ships began to sail in groups. These groups were called convoys. Building new ships also helped keep trade moving.
