Twice is a highly influential South Korean girl group formed by JYP Entertainment.

The group consists of nine members: Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu. They are recognized as one of the best-selling girl groups of all time. In South Korea, they have earned the title "The Nation's Girl Group." They are credited with leading the re-emergence of girl groups during the Korean Wave. While they began with a cute and bubbly image, they have evolved toward more mature and elegant concepts.

The formation of the group involved a competitive process.

In 2015, the television program Sixteen served as a survival show to decide the lineup. J. Y. Park, the founder of JYP Entertainment, oversaw the selection. Initially, seven members were chosen through the competition. Park later expanded the group to nine members. He added Tzuyu because she was the most popular contestant among the audience. He also added Momo to provide specific performance abilities. Park chose the name Twice to represent a specific goal. He stated the group would touch people's hearts twice: once through the ears and once through the eyes.

Twice officially debuted on October 20, 2015, with the extended play (EP) The Story Begins.

Their debut single, "Like Ooh-Ahh," experienced an unusual "reverse run" on music charts. It initially saw moderate success but grew through word of mouth from netizens. By November, the song reached the top 10 on various Korean music charts. The music video for this debut song reached 50 million views on YouTube within five months. This achievement made them the first K-pop group to reach this milestone with a debut music video. They won "Best New Female Artist" at the 2015 Mnet Asian Music Awards.

The year 2016 marked a massive commercial breakthrough for the group.

Their second EP, Page Two, included the hit single "Cheer Up." This song became the best-performing single in South Korea for the entire year. It won "Song of the Year" at both the Melon Music Awards and the Mnet Asian Music Awards. Following this, the single "TT" from the EP Twicecoaster: Lane 1 topped the Gaon charts for four consecutive weeks. The group's "point choreography"—specific, memorable dance moves—became viral memes and dance crazes. Within 19 months of their debut, Twice had sold over 1.2 million units across four EPs and a special album.

Twice also achieved significant success in the Japanese market.

They debuted in Japan on June 28, 2017, with the compilation album #Twice. This album reached number 2 on the Oricon Albums Chart. It recorded the highest first-week sales for a K-pop artist in Japan in two years. Twice became the first Korean girl group to earn platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for both an album and a CD single in the same year. In 2019, they also became the first Korean girl group to perform a Japanese dome tour.

Global recognition continued as the group expanded into Western markets.

They were the first female Korean act to top both the Billboard World Albums and World Digital Song Sales charts simultaneously. This happened with their first studio album, Twicetagram, and the single "Likey." After partnering with Republic Records for American promotions, they achieved five top-ten albums on the US Billboard 200. In 2024, their thirteenth EP, With You-th, reached number one on that chart. Their single "The Feels" was their first to enter the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart.

The connection between Twice and their fans is central to their identity. Fans are known as "Once," a name derived from the group's own social media statement. The members explained that if fans love them once, the group will repay that love with twice the affection. This reciprocal relationship has helped them sell over 14 million albums cumulatively in South Korea and Japan as of 2022. Their career demonstrates how K-pop groups can use digital platforms and specific performance styles to build massive international audiences.
