The network functions through a complex system of owned and affiliated stations. TV Globo owns and operates five television stations directly. It also works with 131 network affiliates to distribute its programming. This structure allows the network to reach 99.5% of potential viewers in Brazil. This coverage includes more than 183 million people. The network's reach covers 98.6% of Brazil's total territory. It also operates international networks like TV Globo Internacional and TV Globo Portugal. These branches help distribute Brazilian content to more than 190 countries.

Most of the network's content is produced within its own massive facilities. The main production center is called Estúdios Globo, formerly known as Projac. This complex is located in the Jacarepaguá neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro. The network produces about 90% of its own programming. Each year, it creates roughly 2,400 hours of entertainment and 3,000 hours of journalism. A key part of its success is the telenovela, which is a long-running dramatic series. These shows are a staple of the nightly schedule. In primetime, the network typically airs four telenovelas from Monday through Saturday.

The history of the Globo organization began long before television was common. The roots trace back to 1925 with the creation of the newspaper O Globo. In 1944, Rádio Globo began broadcasting news on the radio. It was the first Brazilian radio network to use a 24-hour news format. The television network officially began in Rio de Janeiro on channel 4. The first program was a children's show called Uni Duni Tê. This show featured the song "Moon River" by Henry Mancini. By 1966, the network had already purchased TV Paulista to expand into São Paulo.

Throughout the decades, TV Globo has reached many important milestones. In 1969, it premiered Jornal Nacional, the first live national newscast in Brazil. In 1972, the network helped broadcast the first color television in the country. It also began broadcasting major international events like the Summer Olympics. In the 1980s and 1990s, the network saw the rise of massive hits like the show Xou da Xuxa. In 1996, it launched Globo News, which was the first news channel owned by a Brazilian network. The company also moved its analog operations to high-definition digital broadcasting in 2007.

The network's influence is seen in its massive viewership numbers and awards. One famous telenovela, Avenida Brasil, aired in 2012 and reached 50 million viewers. That single show was sold to 130 different countries. The quality of its productions is recognized globally. TV Globo has been presented with 14 international Emmy Awards. The network has also been responsible for the 20 most-watched television programs in Brazilian history. These numbers show how deeply the network is part of daily life in Brazil.

TV Globo has evolved from a family-owned business into a global economic powerhouse. It is part of a larger multimedia system that includes cellular phone services and book publishing. The company has also expanded into cable television and film production. Recently, it entered a strategic alliance with Microsoft. In August, Microsoft paid $126 million for an 11.5 percent share in Globo Cabo. This is the company's cable subsidiary. This growth shows how the network is moving from a local business to a major player in the global mass-media market.
