This story takes place in China and follows Prince Calaf. He falls in love with Princess Turandot, who is known for having a cold heart. To win her hand in marriage, a man must solve three difficult riddles. If he gives a wrong answer, he faces death. Calaf passes the test, but the Princess still refuses to marry him. He offers her a new challenge instead. If she can guess his name before the sun rises, he will accept his death.

Making this music was a very special task for the composer. Giacomo Puccini wanted the sounds to feel authentic to the setting. He used music from the region to help tell the story.

He even ordered thirteen custom-made gongs to use in the music. Puccini also used melodies from a music box given to him by a diplomat. One famous melody is called "Mòlìhuā," which represents the Princess's splendor. In total, eight themes in the opera come from traditional Chinese music.

The story of Turandot has many old roots. It likely began with a twelfth-century poem called "Haft Peykar" by the poet Nizami. Later, in 1722, François Pétis de la Croix published a collection of stories. These stories were said to come from Middle Eastern folklore. One of those stories featured a cold princess named Turandokht. This name is where the opera gets its title. The name Turandot comes from Persian words meaning a princess from the Turan region. Some people say the final "t" in the name should be silent.

Writing the opera was a long and difficult journey for Puccini. He began working on it in March 1920 with two writers. He worked hard on the music until he became very ill. Puccini died in November 1924 before the work was finished.

He left behind 36 pages of sketches for the end. Because the music was not done, Franco Alfano was chosen to finish it. Alfano used Puccini's sketches to complete the final part of the story. The very first performance happened in Milan on April 25, 1926.

People still love this opera all over the world today. During the first performance, the conductor Arturo Toscanini did something amazing.

In the middle of the third act, the orchestra stopped playing. Toscanini told the audience that the composer had laid down his pen. This was a way to honor Puccini's memory. Since then, the opera has traveled to many places like Rome, New York, and London. It remains a powerful way to experience music and history together.
