It is the second-smallest province in the country by land area. However, it is also the most crowded place in Argentina. Many people live close together in this small space. The capital city is San Miguel de Tucumán. It sits near the provinces of Salta, Catamarca, and Santiago del Estero. People often call this place "The Garden of the Republic." This nickname comes from the many green farms found there.

The land in Tucumán has two very different sides. The eastern side has flat lands called the Gran Chaco. The western side has high mountains and deep canyons.

Long ago, the land was home to the Diaguita and Tonocote people. The name Tucumán might come from the Quechua language. It may mean "the place of origin of several rivers." Spanish explorers arrived in the area in 1535. Later, leaders built the town of San Miguel de Tucumán. In 1816, a very important event happened here. The Congress of Tucumán met at the Tucumán House.

There, the United Provinces of the Río de la Plata declared their independence from Spain.

Today, the province is famous for growing many things. It produces 60 percent of all the sugar cane in Argentina.
