It sits between two large islands. One island is Honshu. The other island is Hokkaido. This strait connects the Sea of Japan to the Pacific Ocean.

Many ships sail through these waters.

You can also take a ferry to cross. A long path called the Seikan Tunnel goes under the sea. It passes under the narrowest part of the strait. This part is 12.1 miles long. It connects Tappi Misaki on Honshu to Shirakami Misaki on Hokkaido.

This water is also a special line for nature. A man named Thomas Blakiston studied the area. He saw that animals on Hokkaido were different from animals on Honshu. He called this the Blakiston's Line. It acts as a boundary for many species. The water has two narrow parts called necks. These necks are about 20 km across. The water is deep here. It reaches depths of 200 m and 140 m.
