geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Oshima Peninsula is in northern Japan. It sits on the island of Hokkaido. It is the southernmost part of that island. The land is very mountainous. Most people live in flat areas. You can find active volcanoes here. Mount E is one of them. Hokkaido Koma-ga-take is another. These volcanoes make the land special. You can also find onsen. Onsen are hot springs.

There are two cities on this land. One is Hakodate. The other is Hokuto. There are also many small towns. Some towns fish in the sea. Other towns grow crops. You can visit Matsumae Castle. It is the only castle on Hokkaido. It is also the northernmost castle in Japan.

A large park is there too. It is called Ōnuma Quasi-National Park. Brown bears live in the area. These bears are very active. They sometimes eat crops or farm animals. People have hunted them for over 120 years. The peninsula is separated from the rest of Hokkaido by a low area. This area is used for farming.
