People often keep them in tanks called aquariums. Many fish have bright colors. These colors come from special cells. Some cells have pigment. Other cells are iridescent, which means they shine.

Most people keep freshwater fish. These fish are often cheap to buy. Many come from fish farms in Asia or Florida. Some fish are harder to breed. People must catch these fish in the wild. This makes them cost more. Some expensive fish are arowanas.

Other people keep saltwater fish. These fish usually come from coral reefs. They have very vivid colors and patterns. It can be hard to keep them alive. This is because you must add sea salt to the water. You also must watch the salt levels. Water can evaporate and change the salt.

Coral reefs are very special. They cover less than 1% of the ocean. Yet, they are home to 25% of all marine fish. Many fish hide in the reefs to stay safe. Today, pollution and overfishing threaten these reefs.
