In the savanna, the driest months have less than 60 mm of rain. These areas often have flat grasslands. These grasslands cover about 20% of the Earth's surface. Many different plants live in these specific zones.

These climates help us grow many things we use. Tropical plants provide coffee, cocoa, and oil palm. In the rainforest, plants grow in layers to reach the sun. This is called vertical stratification. One layer has tall trees, and others have shrubs or grass.

A tropical climate is defined by its consistent warmth. In these areas, the mean temperature of the coldest month is always 18°C or higher. These regions also feature high humidity and intense sunlight throughout the year. Because the temperature stays so stable, the annual temperature range is normally very small. This warmth and moisture make the tropics vital parts of the Earth's ecosystem.

Scientists distinguish between different tropical climates using a value called Pdry. This term refers to the precipitation of the driest month in a specific region. The three main subtypes are the tropical rainforest, the tropical monsoon, and the tropical savanna.

The tropical rainforest climate, or Af, occurs when Pdry is 60 mm or more. The tropical monsoon climate, or Am, has a Pdry between 60 mm and 100 mm. Finally, the tropical savanna climate, or Aw and As, occurs when Pdry is less than 60 mm. This measurement helps researchers understand how much water is available during the dry seasons.

The tropical rainforest climate is found within 5 to 10 degrees of the equator. These regions, such as the upper Amazon basin and the Congo basin, experience high temperatures. The yearly average temperature is normally between 25°C and 27°C. Rainfall is very abundant and can exceed 100 inches every year. Because there is almost no drought period, plants grow throughout the entire year. A unique process called transpiration also helps maintain this environment. Transpiration is when water evaporates from the surface of living plants into the atmosphere. This process helps contribute back to the high humidity of the climate.

The tropical monsoon climate is characterized by uneven precipitation throughout the year. These regions are often found in South and Southeast Asia, West Africa, and South America. The average annual temperature is around 27°C with a small range of about 3°C. This climate features three distinct seasons: a cool dry season, a hot dry season, and a rainy monsoon season. The vegetation in these areas often forms a complex, layered structure. The surface layer consists of dense shrubs and grasses. Below that is the understory layer, where trees reach about 15 meters in height. The canopy tree layer contains trees from 25 to 40 meters tall. Above them, sporadic trees in the emergent layer can grow taller than 35 meters.

Tropical savanna climates, also called tropical wet and dry climates, occur at the outer margins of the tropics. These are usually located between 10 and 25 degrees latitude in both hemispheres. They are found in parts of Central Africa, South America, and northern or eastern Australia. The annual precipitation in these regions is between 700 and 1000 mm. Temperatures remain warm, staying above an 18°C mean all year. In the summer, temperatures range from 25°C to 30°C, while winter temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C. The driest months typically occur in the winter and receive less than 60 mm of rain.

Vegetation in the savanna is often characterized by flat grasslands with areas of woodlands. These grassland biomes are massive, covering almost 20% of the Earth's surface. You can find specific plants like Rhodes grass, red oats grass, star grass, and lemongrass here. Other regions support different plants, such as the acacia senegal or the eucalyptus tree. The diversity of plants in the tropics is quite high. Many of these plants are rich in resources that humans use, such as coffee, cocoa, and oil palm. In rainforests, plants often use vertical stratification to grow in layers. This allows different species, from tall trees to small shrubs, to reach the sunlight.

Understanding these climates helps us see how temperature and water shape the world. The Köppen system allows us to map these connections across the globe. By looking at the latitude and the seasonal rhythm of rain, we can predict what life will look like in a region.
