During this time, Venus looks like a small black circle. It moves slowly across the bright face of the Sun.

These events do not happen often. They occur in pairs that are eight years apart. After a pair, there is a very long gap. This gap can last 121.5 years or 105.5 years. These patterns repeat in a large cycle of 243 years. The next transits will happen in December 2117 and December 2125.

Watching these transits helps scientists learn about space. In the past, they used them to find distances. They used the movement to find the astronomical unit. This is the distance from the Earth to the Sun.

In 2012, the transit helped scientists study exoplanets. These are planets that orbit other stars.

Early scientists studied these events with great care. Jeremiah Horrocks made the first recorded observation in 1639. He used a telescope to look at the Sun safely. He focused the light onto paper to protect his eyes.
