A transit of Venus is a special event in our solar system. It happens when the planet Venus passes directly between the Earth and the Sun. When this occurs, Venus appears as a small black circle moving across the bright face of the Sun.

This event is rare because the orbit of Venus is tilted by 3.39 degrees. Because of this tilt, Venus usually passes above or below the Sun from our view. A transit only happens when Venus reaches conjunction with the Sun while also crossing the Earth's orbital plane.

These transits follow a very specific and repeating pattern. They occur in pairs that are eight years apart. After a pair, there is a long gap of either 121.5 years or 105.5 years.

This pattern repeats in a large cycle that lasts about 243 years. The last pair of transits happened on 8 June 2004 and 5–6 June 2012. The next pair will not happen until 10–11 December 2117 and 8 December 2125. This cycle stays stable for a long time, but the timing can change over many thousands of years.

Humans have studied the motions of Venus for a very long time. Ancient groups in India, Greece, Egypt, Babylon, and China all recorded its movement. The Greek thinker Pythagoras is credited with realizing that the morning and evening stars were actually Venus.

While there is no proof of ancient transits, some believe Maya art might show them. The Persian scholar Avicenna also claimed to see a spot on the Sun. However, modern scholars wonder if he actually saw a sunspot instead of the planet.

The first recorded observation was made by Jeremiah Horrocks in 1639. He was an English astronomer who lived in Much Hoole. Horrocks used a telescope to project the Sun's image onto paper so he could watch safely.

He was the first to realize that transits occur in pairs eight years apart. Later, in 1761 and 1769, scientists traveled all over the world to watch the transits. Some even went to places like Tahiti, Siberia, and the Cape of Good Hope. These expeditions were very difficult, and some people even died from diseases like yellow fever during their travels.

Watching these transits has helped us understand the scale of space. Early observers used the movement to calculate the astronomical unit, which is the distance from Earth to the Sun.

By using the transit, scientists could find the distance to Venus and other bodies in our solar system. In 2012, the transit helped scientists improve how they search for exoplanets. Exoplanets are planets that orbit stars far away from our own Sun. These rare moments in the sky act like a bridge to understanding the entire universe.
