Trance is a special kind of electronic dance music.

It aims to create a trance-like state of mind. This means the music helps listeners feel a sense of deep focus or heightened consciousness. People love it because it builds intense feelings through sound. Most tracks feature a steady beat between 120 and 150 beats per minute.

The music often uses repeating melodic phrases to keep people moving. These melodies can act as a central hook that stays with you throughout the whole song.

Making a trance track involves a careful way of building tension.

Producers often use a "four-on-the-floor" beat where a kick drum hits on every downbeat. However, they often keep the kick drum quiet to make room for the bassline. A common part of the song is a big climax called a "drop." Before this happens, you might hear a "snare roll." This is a fast series of drum hits that get louder and faster.

After a big peak, the music might enter a soft breakdown. During this time, the drums and percussion stop entirely. This leaves only the melody or soft atmospheric sounds to play for a long time.

Trance music first emerged in Frankfurt, Germany.

It grew out of the techno and EBM scenes in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Early labels like Eye Q and Harthouse helped define the sound. A producer named Sven Väth was very important to this history. He was inspired by traveling to Goa, where DJs used psychedelic rock at beach parties.

This influence helped create Goa trance, which uses melodies inspired by Eastern philosophy. In 1991, MFS Records in Berlin also became a major part of the scene. They signed famous artists like Paul van Dyk.

There are many different styles, or subgenres, of trance.

Hard trance uses a faster tempo and inspired styles like hardstyle. Uplifting trance is another popular type that uses big, emotional sounds. Some people call it "anthem trance" because it sounds so grand. In the mid-1990s, a style called dream trance became popular. This was led by Robert Miles and his song "Children" from 1996. In Australia, a performer named Quench released the song "Dreams" in 1993. This track was very successful and sold over a million copies worldwide by the year 2000.

Trance music connects to many other types of art and sound.

While many tracks are instrumental, some include singing. Vocal trance often features female soloists with high, operatic voices. These singers create an ethereal feeling among the electronic sounds. Some styles even pull ideas from classical music or film scores. Even today, the genre continues to change and grow. In 2023, the music site Beatport even split trance into two categories. One category is for the main dance floor, and the other is for deeper, hypnotic sounds.
