arts Maturity 7-9 Next article →

New-age music is a special kind of sound meant to inspire people. It helps listeners feel calm, relaxed, or full of hope. Many people use this music during yoga or massage sessions. It is also great for meditation or quiet reading time.

Some people play it to make their homes feel peaceful. This music is often used to help manage stress. It aims to bring a sense of joy rather than a deep trance.

There are many ways to make these sounds. Some artists use acoustic instruments like the piano or flute. You might also hear a harp, a guitar, or even a sitar.

Other musicians use electronic tools like synth pads. Some even mix these styles to make electroacoustic music. You might hear nature sounds like rain or ocean waves. Some artists even include the calls of whales, wolves, or eagles.

This music has a very interesting history. The first recording was called Music for Zen Meditation in 1964. Paul Horn made important music starting in 1968. Later, Irv Teibel made recordings with nature sounds and chants.

In 1975, Steven Halpern released the Spectrum Suite. This work helped start the whole new-age music movement. At first, small independent businesses sold these records in bookstores and gift shops.

Many famous names are linked to this style. Kitarō is a very well-known artist from Japan.

Enya helped bring this music to many people in America. Other artists include Yanni, George Winston, and Paul Winter. Some people call it "earth music" instead of new-age. The Grammy Awards even have a category for it. The first winner of that award was Andreas Vollenweider in 1987.

Not every musician likes being called a "new-age" artist. Some feel the name is just for marketing or selling records. They think it is a broad term that covers many different styles. Some artists make music that is very rhythmic and energetic. Others prefer terms like "contemporary instrumental" or "adult alternative." Even with the debate, the music remains a way to connect with nature. It helps people find a moment of peace in a busy world.
