It is found in the Book of Genesis. This story helps explain why people speak many languages.

In the story, all humans spoke just one language. They moved to a place called Shinar. They wanted to build a city with a very tall tower. They hoped the tower would reach the sky.

According to the text, God saw the people working together. He made their speech hard to understand. People could no longer talk to each other. Because of this, they moved to different parts of the world. The city and the tower were left unfinished.

Some scholars think the story was inspired by real places. They point to a large building in Babylon called Etemenanki. This was a ziggurat, which is a type of stepped temple.

The name Babel might come from a Hebrew word that means to confuse. This matches what happens in the story.
