The city sits on a broad, sloping plateau. This land is filled with rivers, deep ravines, and urban forests. Toronto is located at the western end of Lake Ontario. It serves as the main anchor for a large urban area called the Golden Horseshoe. This region surrounds the lake and has a huge population.

In 2025, the population of this urban agglomeration is estimated at 11,198,136 people. The Toronto census metropolitan area is estimated to have 7,106,379 residents. The city itself had a population of 2,794,356 in the 2021 Census. It is the fourth-most populous city in North America.

The history of this land began long before the city was built. Indigenous peoples have lived in the Toronto area for over 10,000 years. The Wendat were an Iroquoian-speaking agricultural people. They farmed this territory for many centuries. Later, the Haudenosaunee people established villages here. They lived at Ganatsekwyagon on the Rouge River and Teiaiagon on the Humber River.

By 1701, the Mississaugas had moved into the area. The name "Toronto" may come from a word meaning "plenty." Some sources suggest it refers to "The Narrows." This was a channel where Lake Simcoe flows into Lake Couchiching. The Mohawk called it a place where trees stand in the water.

European contact changed the region significantly. French traders built Fort Rouillé in 1750. However, they abandoned it in 1759 during the Seven Years' War. The British eventually defeated the French and their indigenous allies. By 1763, the area became part of the British colony of Quebec. In 1787, the British arranged the Toronto Purchase. This secured more than 250,000 acres of land from the Mississaugas. In 1793, Governor John Graves Simcoe established the town of York.

He moved the capital of Upper Canada to York to protect it from attacks. The town was named after the Duke of York and Albany.

The town of York faced many challenges during its early years. During the War of 1812, the town experienced the Battle of York.

American troops captured and plundered the town. They destroyed much of the garrison and burned the parliament buildings. This occupation lasted for two weeks. In 1834, the town was renamed and incorporated as the City of Toronto.

During this time, slavery was banned in Upper Canada. Toronto became a destination for people seeking freedom. The city's population grew rapidly through the 19th century. Many Irish immigrants arrived while fleeing the Great Irish Famine.

Toronto has grown into a massive economic power. It is Canada's largest financial centre. The city is home to the Toronto Stock Exchange. It also hosts the headquarters of Canada's five largest banks. Many large multinational corporations are based here. The economy is highly diversified across many different sectors. These include technology, life sciences, and aerospace. It is also a leader in fashion, design, and environmental innovation.

The city's infrastructure helped this growth. Railways and steamships linked Toronto to the rest of North America.

The city is famous for being one of the most multicultural places on Earth. About half of its residents were born outside of Canada. Over 200 different ethnic origins are represented in the population.

Members are elected every four years. The mayor serves as the head of the council. The mayor is also the chief executive officer of the municipal government. The city continues to expand its reach. It has grown through annexation and amalgamation.
