Long ago, quinine was used as medicine. People used it to help prevent malaria. They learned about it from people in Peru, Bolivia, and Ecuador. In the 1800s, British soldiers in India mixed quinine with soda and sugar. This made the bitter medicine easier to drink.

They also mixed it with gin. This created the gin and tonic drink. Today, many people use tonic water to mix other drinks. Some people mix it with vodka. Others add lemon or lime juice. You can even mix it with coffee. One shop in Sweden made a drink with espresso and tonic.

Tonic water has a neat trick. It can glow under ultraviolet light. This is called fluorescence. The quinine lets out light instead of heat. It can even glow in direct sunlight against a dark background. The glow stops when the light is gone.
