Carbonated water is water with gas inside it. This gas is called carbon dioxide. It makes small bubbles that feel fizzy on your tongue.

Some water is fizzy because of nature. It comes from underground springs. Other water is made by people. They use high pressure to push gas into the water. This helps more gas dissolve. When you open a bottle, the pressure drops. The gas then escapes as bubbles.

In the 1760s, a man named Joseph Priestley found a way to make this water.

He did it by accident at a brewery. He found the taste very good. Later, companies began to make it in large amounts. Thomas Henry built the first factory in England. He used large bellows to help the process.

Some fizzy waters have extra minerals. These are tiny bits of salt like sodium bicarbonate. These minerals can help the taste. They also help balance the acid. Adding gas makes the water a bit acidic. This can give it a tart flavor.
