Adeyemi’s process as a writer involves rigorous revision and professional development. After her first written novel did not receive positive feedback, she committed a full year to a new project. She entered this work into Pitch Wars, a competition program designed for emerging writers. In Pitch Wars, writers are matched with professional editors and established authors. These mentors help the writers revise their manuscripts before they are submitted to literary agents. This structured approach helped refine the storytelling that would eventually define her career.

The Legacy of Orïsha trilogy consists of three distinct novels. The first, Children of Blood and Bone, was released in March 2018. It follows a protagonist named Zélie Adebola, who fights a monarchy to restore magic to her people. The second book, Children of Virtue and Vengeance, was published in December 2019. The final installment, Children of Anguish and Anarchy, arrived in June 2024. Each book expands the magical world and the complex social structures within it. These stories are categorized as young adult (YA) fantasy, a genre aimed at older children and teenagers.

Adeyemi’s journey to literary success is rooted in her personal history and education. She was born on August 1, 1993, in the United States to Nigerian immigrants. Her father was a physician in Nigeria but worked as a taxi driver in the U.S. while transferring his qualifications. Her mother worked as a cleaning woman. Although she did not grow up immersed in her Yoruba ethnicity, she embraced her heritage as an adult. She attended Harvard University, where she earned an honors degree in English Literature. Later, a fellowship in Salvador, Brazil, allowed her to study West African mythology. This academic study provided the direct inspiration for her breakthrough novel.

The impact of her work is reflected in significant awards and industry milestones. Children of Blood and Bone debuted at number one on The New York Times Best Sellers List. It won the 2018 Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy. It also received the 2019 Waterstones Book Prize and the 2019 Hugo Lodestar Award. In 2019, Forbes named her to their 30 Under 30 list. By 2020, TIME magazine included her in the TIME 100 Most Influential People under the "Pioneers" category. These honors demonstrate her influence on modern literature.

Beyond books, Adeyemi’s stories are transitioning into the world of cinema. The film rights for her debut novel have been the subject of several major industry deals. While Disney's subsidiaries initially held the rights, the rights eventually lapsed in 2021. In early 2022, Paramount Pictures acquired the rights for a guaranteed exclusive theatrical release. This adaptation will feature Gina Prince-Bythewood as the director. Adeyemi is not just a source for the story; she will also serve as an executive producer and write the script. This ensures her original vision remains central to the film.

Adeyemi also contributes to the broader literary community through teaching and collaboration. She works as a creative writing coach and offers an online course titled The Writer's Roadmap. Her professional website has been recognized by Writer's Digest as one of the top 101 websites for writers. Additionally, she has worked on animated projects, such as the all-ages series My Dad the Bounty Hunter. Her work connects deeply to the concept of representation in media. She writes so that Black girls can see themselves as the stars of magical adventures. Her success shows how cultural identity can drive powerful, universal storytelling.
