Her body of work includes fiction, nonfiction, and various lectures. She is recognized as a central figure in postcolonial feminist literature. This field examines the effects of colonialism on cultures and the rights of women. Adichie’s writing often explores complex themes such as religion, immigration, gender, and culture. She frequently uses her Igbo heritage to shape the perspectives in her stories. Many of her novels are set in Nsukka, the place where she grew up.

Adichie’s writing process often involves blending different cultural influences. She juxtaposes Western styles with African traditions and Igbo culture. Her stories are frequently built upon real historical events and personal memories. For example, she used her father's accounts of the Biafran War to write her second novel. This novel, titled Half of a Yellow Sun, was published in 2006. She also draws from her own experiences of navigating different cultures. Her short story "My Mother, the Crazy African" explores the tension between two opposite cultures.

Her literary career began with several early works during her university years. In 1997, she published a poetry collection titled Decisions. She also wrote a play called For Love of Biafra in 1998. At that time, she used the name Amanda N. Adichie. Her debut novel, Purple Hibiscus, was published in 2003 by Algonquin Books. This book was a major success and has been translated into more than forty languages.

Before this, she faced challenges when publishers asked her to change her settings from Africa to America.

Adichie’s early life provided much of the foundation for her later themes. She was born on 15 September 1977, in Enugu, Nigeria. Her parents, James Nwoye Adichie and Grace Odigwe, were of Igbo origin. Her father worked as a professor at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Her mother eventually became the first female registrar at that same university. During the Biafran War in 1967, her father worked for the Biafran government. Adichie lost both of her grandfathers during this conflict. These historical realities later became central to her storytelling.

As a child, Adichie’s reading habits underwent a significant shift. Initially, she read only English-language stories like those by Enid Blyton. She even wrote stories about white, blue-eyed characters modeled after British children. However, at age ten, she discovered African literature. She read works by Chinua Achebe and Buchi Emecheta. These authors became major inspirations for her own career. She also studied the Igbo language throughout her high school years.

Adichie is also a highly influential public speaker. She has delivered famous TED Talks that reached global audiences. Her 2009 talk, "The Danger of a Single Story," is widely known. In 2012, she gave a talk titled "We Should All Be Feminists."

This talk had a massive cultural impact. Parts of it were used by the singer Beyoncé in a song. In 2016, the fashion brand Dior featured her words on a T-shirt.

She was also inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2017. Adichie has been a visiting writer at the University of Michigan–Flint. She has also co-curated the PEN World Voices Festival of International Literature. Her work continues to connect people across different cultural and social systems.
