Wizkid's personal history is rooted in the Ojuelegba suburb of Surulere, Lagos. He was born on 16 July 1990 into an interfaith household. His mother was a Pentecostal Christian, while his father practiced Islam. He grew up in a large family with twelve female siblings. During his youth, he listened to influential musicians such as King Sunny Ade, Fela Kuti, and Bob Marley. Before using his current stage name, he performed under the name Lil Prinz until 2006. He also spent time at Point Beat Studios observing other artists record their music.

His rise to international stardom is marked by several major statistical achievements. In 2016, he collaborated with the artist Drake on the single "One Dance."
