He is best known for helping create New Journalism. This was a new way of writing news in the 1960s and 1970s. Instead of just stating facts, writers used tools from storybooks. They used long talks, many points of view, and detailed scenes. Wolfe also looked closely at the things people owned. He believed these items showed a person's social status. This helped readers understand how different people lived and felt.

Wolfe used a special method called saturation reporting to find his stories. This means a writer stays with people for a very long time. They shadow their subjects to watch real life happen. This is different from regular reporting where you just ask questions. By being there for long stretches, the writer becomes a witness. They see the real moments as they occur. This helped Wolfe write about the famous counterculture of the 1960s. He even used strange punctuation and sounds to show big personalities.

Wolfe grew up in Richmond, Virginia. He was born on March 2, 1930. His father was an editor and his mother was a garden designer. In school, he was a star baseball player. He even tried to play baseball for the New York Giants. He was a pitcher, but he was cut after three days. He said he could not throw good fastballs. This led him to focus entirely on his love for writing instead.

He went to Washington and Lee University to study English. Later, he went to Yale University for a doctoral program. He wrote a famous book called The Right Stuff in 1979.

This book was about the Mercury Seven astronauts. It was so popular that it became a movie in 1983. In 1987, he published his first big novel. It was called The Bonfire of the Vanities and it was a huge success.

Wolfe's work connects to how we see the world today. He wrote about art, architecture, and even how humans learned to speak. He wanted to show how much people care about their place in society. Many of his ideas about social status are still talked about. His books helped change how news is written in magazines. He showed that journalism could be a kind of literature. People still study his unique style in schools today.
