He spent many years telling stories about important things happening in the world. For a long time, he was one of the "Big Three" anchors in the United States. This means he was one of the three main people people watched for nightly news. He worked for CBS News for many years. His job was to explain big events to people watching at home. He became a household name because he was always there during major moments in history.

His journey as a reporter involved many different steps. First, he worked in local news in Texas. In 1961, he used a special map to show the size of Hurricane Carla on TV. This helped people see the danger and move to safety.

Later, he moved to big roles like a White House correspondent. This means he reported on what the President was doing. He also worked as a foreign correspondent in places like London and Vietnam. He traveled far to see how the world was changing.

Dan's career grew from his early days in Texas. He was born on October 31, 1931, in Wharton County.

His parents were not high school graduates, but they loved reading. Dan went to college at Sam Houston State Teachers College. He studied journalism and even worked for a radio station. He graduated with his degree in 1953. He even played football for his school. These early years helped him learn how to tell great stories.

He reported on many famous and serious events. In 1963, he was in Dallas during the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. He later covered the Watergate scandal and the resignation of President Richard Nixon.

In 1981, he became the anchor for the CBS Evening News. He held this important job for 24 years. He also reported from places like Afghanistan and covered the Gulf War. He saw many leaders, including President Ronald Reagan, during his long career.

Today, you can still find Dan Rather sharing news in new ways. After leaving his main anchor job in 2005, he worked on other programs. He hosted shows on the AXS TV channel.
