He was known for a new way of writing news. People called this New Journalism. In this style, writers use tools from storybooks. They use long talks and many points of view. Wolfe also used detailed descriptions of things people own. He believed these items show a person's social status.

Wolfe liked to use a method called saturation reporting. This means a writer stays with people for a long time. They watch and learn about real life as it happens. This helped him write about the culture of the 1960s. He wrote a book called The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. It told the story of a group called the Merry Pranksters.

He also wrote about space heroes. His book The Right Stuff was about the Mercury Seven astronauts.
