People settled these islands about 1,000 years ago. In the past, people ate mainly fish and coconut.

About 2,500 people live in Tokelau today. This is one of the smallest populations in the world. Most people there speak Tokelauan as their first language. Many residents were born in Samoa or New Zealand.

Tokelau is a leader in clean power. It is the first nation to use 100% solar power. This power comes from the sun.

The islands are very low to the sea. This makes them at risk if sea levels rise. In 2005, a big storm called a cyclone hit the islands. The storm brought seawater into the villages. It also damaged many food crops like bananas and coconuts.
