An atoll is a ring of islands on a coral reef. This ring holds a large lagoon in the middle. The land area is small. It is only about 3 square kilometers. The lagoon is much bigger than the land.

Many small islands, or islets, make up the group. One main place to live is Fale. It is on Fale Islet. Another group of people lives on Fenua Fala Islet.

About 483 people live on Fakaofo. Most people go to the Congregational Church. A smaller group goes to the Catholic Church. The Council of Elders helps lead the people. This group is made of citizens over age 60.

Fakaofo has a long history. It was once called Bowditch Island. One islet has tall concrete walls. These walls are five meters high. Residents built them to stay safe from rising seas. The walls help protect the land from the water.
