The Togoland campaign took place from August 6 to August 26, 1914. It was a military invasion of the German colony of Togoland in West Africa. This conflict marked the beginning of the West African campaign of the First World War. The main goal for the invading forces was to seize control of a vital communication center. This center was located at a place called Kamina.

In 1914, Togoland was a German protectorate. The territory was slightly larger than the country of Ireland. It had a population of approximately one million people. The landscape included coastal marshes, lagoons, and a plateau covered in forest and scrub. A mountain range ran through the region. This range made it difficult to move between the coast and the interior. Many people in the colony worked in palm oil cultivation.

The German Empire had built significant infrastructure in the southern region. They constructed three metre-gauge railway lines and several roads. These lines connected the capital, Lomé, to places like Blitta and Kpalimé. The roads were reported to be fit for motor vehicles in 1914. However, the German military presence was quite small. There were no formal German army units in the colony. Instead, the defense relied on about 1,500 paramilitary police, reservists, and levies under Captain Georg Pfähler.

The most important site in Togoland was the Kamina Funkstation. This was a large wireless transmitter station. It served as a relay station for communication between Germany and its overseas colonies. It also linked the German Navy and South America to Berlin. The British Admiralty wanted to capture this station. They feared it could be used to coordinate German attacks on ships in the Atlantic. The station had been completed in June 1914, just months before the war began.

The invasion involved two main Allied powers: Britain and France. The British forces advanced from the Gold Coast to the west. The French forces moved from Dahomey to the north and east. The British contingent included about 1,100 soldiers and 185 armed police. They also relied on at least 2,000 carriers to move supplies. The French force consisted of 1,265 troops. This included infantry and African cavalry armed with lances, bows, and rifles.

The campaign moved in several stages as the forces pushed inland. The German forces withdrew from the capital, Lomé, to fight delaying actions. They moved north toward Kamina to slow the invaders. The Allies faced difficult terrain, including bushland and swamps. This forced them to stay on the roads and railways. These paths were often in poor condition and difficult for wheeled vehicles. Small engagements occurred at Agbeluvoe and Khra. The French also engaged German forces in a skirmish at Bafilo in the north-east.

The German forces surrendered the colony on August 26, 1914. After the war, the territory underwent a process called partition. This means the land was divided into different parts. In 1916, the victors divided the colony. By July 1922, the land was established as two League of Nations mandates. These were known as British Togoland and French Togoland. This division fundamentally changed the political map of the region for many years.
