A tithe is a one-tenth part of something.

People give this as a contribution to a religious group. It can also be a required tax paid to a government. In the past, tithes were often paid in kind. This meant people gave things they grew or raised, like grain, oil, or animals.

Today, most tithes are voluntary. People usually give money through cash, checks, or online tools.

When people give more than the tithe, these extra gifts are called offerings. Offerings often go toward special tasks like fixing buildings or helping with mission work.

Many different belief systems have used tithing for a long time. In the Hebrew Bible, the Torah lists several types of agricultural tithes. These included the first tithe, the second tithe, and the poor tithe.

The first tithe and others were given to priests and Levites. These religious leaders did not own land, so the tithe was how they survived. There was also a seven-year cycle called shmita. In some years, people gave a second tithe to eat at the Temple. In other years, they gave a poor tithe to help widows and orphans.

History shows that tithing was a common practice in the ancient Near East. While many old laws about it are lost, other documents show it happened often. For example, in Mesopotamia, records show people paying a tenth tax on garments.

Some records even mention a tithe of silver for gods like Bel or Nabu. In ancient Carthage, people sent a tenth of their public money to the god Melqart. These stories show that giving a tenth was a way many cultures handled wealth and duty.

Christianity also has a long history with the tithe. Early church councils, like the Council of Tours in 567, taught about it.

The Third Council of Mâcon in 585 even set rules for those who did not follow it. Today, many denominations still hold this as an important belief. For instance, the Seventh-day Adventist Church sees tithing as a way to show God owns everything. Some Methodist traditions use a idea called Storehouse Tithing. This means the tithe goes to the local church before any other charity work.

Different groups today have their own ways of following these old ideas. In Judaism, many Orthodox Jews practice ma'aser kesafim. This means they give ten percent of their income to charity.

In modern Israel, some religious Jews still follow laws for agricultural tithes. Even in modern America, many people follow these traditions. A 2018 study found that 86% of people with Evangelical beliefs see tithing as a commandment. Whether through ancient grain or modern money, the idea of giving a tenth remains a powerful part of many lives.
