Titanosaurs were a group of dinosaurs.

These dinosaurs were amazing animals.
Titanosaurs were a big group of long-necked dinosaurs.

These dinosaurs had many special parts. They had small heads and tiny teeth. Their necks were long, but not as long as some other dinosaurs. Their bodies were wide. This gave them a wide-legged way of walking. Some had thick arms. Some even walked on sturdy bone stumps instead of using fingers.
Many titanosaurs had osteoderms. These are hard bumps on their skin. They might have helped protect them from bites. They may have also helped store nutrients.
Titanosaurs were a diverse group of long-necked dinosaurs. They were part of a larger group called sauropodomorphs. These animals lived on every continent on Earth, including Antarctica. They were the last surviving group of long-necked dinosaurs. They were still around during the extinction at the end of the Cretaceous period. Some were among the largest land animals to ever live.
These dinosaurs had many interesting ways of moving and eating. They had small, wide heads with very tiny teeth. Some teeth looked like little pegs or pencils. Their necks were long, but their tails were whip-like. Titanosaurs had a very wide chest area. This gave them a wide-legged stance when they walked. Their footprints show they walked with their legs spread out.

Finding complete titanosaurs is a hard job for scientists. Most fossils are just broken pieces or single bones. We have very few complete skulls from this group. Only four species, like Rapetosaurus, have nearly complete skulls. We also have very few complete necks or feet. However, we do know about their nesting habits. Scientists found nesting grounds at a site called Auca Mahuevo. Some fossil eggs even contain tiny embryos with skin.
Titanosaurs came in many different sizes. The giant Patagotitan lived in Argentina and was huge. Other titanosaurs, like Magyarosaurus, lived on islands in Europe. Because they lived on islands, they were much smaller. These small ones are sometimes called island dwarfs. Some species, like Ibirania in Brazil, were also very small. This shows that even closely related dinosaurs could be different sizes.
Many titanosaurs had special skin called osteoderms. These were hard, bead-like scales on their bodies. Some scientists think they grew in rows like a stegosaur. These bumps might have helped store nutrients for the animals. They might have also helped protect them from bites. New studies show that crocodile-like animals might have bitten them.

Titanosauria is a diverse group of sauropod dinosaurs. They were the last surviving group of long-necked sauropods. They thrived until the extinction event at the end of the Cretaceous period. These animals lived on every continent, including Antarctica. This group includes some of the largest land animals to ever exist. Their name comes from the Titans of Greek mythology. This name refers to the type genus, Titanosaurus.
Titanosaurs had a very unique body structure. Their heads were relatively small and wide. Some species had heads like brachiosaurids. Others had heads like diplodocids. Their nostrils were large, which is a feature called macronarian. Their teeth were very small. Some teeth were spoon-shaped, while others were like pegs or pencils.
Their bodies were built for a specific way of moving. Titanosaurs had a wide chest area, or pectoral region. This gave them a wide-legged stance. Because of this, their fossilized trackways are much broader than other sauropods. Their necks were of average length for sauropods. Their tails were whip-like, though not as long as diplodocid tails.
Their limbs and bones show even more specialized traits. Some titanosaurs had very stocky forelimbs. Some species even lost their finger bones entirely. They walked on horseshoe-shaped stumps made of metacarpal bones.
Titanosaurs showed an incredible range in body size. The genus Patagotitan had an estimated mass of 70,000 kilograms. The massive Argentinosaurus and Puertasaurus were also found in the same region. In contrast, some titanosaurs were very small. Magyarosaurus lived on islands in Europe and was likely an island dwarf. Ibirania was another tiny example from Brazil. This shows that even closely related species could have very different sizes.
Many titanosaurs had specialized skin features. Some had osteoderms, which are bony plates or scales. These were first confirmed in the genus Saltasaurus. Some scientists believe these were arranged in rows like a stegosaur. These osteoderms might have stored nutrients for the animals. They may have also provided protection. Recent studies show that bite marks from predators were found on these osteoderms.
Finding complete titanosaurs is a major challenge for paleontologists. They have the least complete fossil record of any major sauropod group. No complete skeletons are known. Most species are only known from a few bones. Skulls are especially rare. Only four genera, such as Nemegtosaurus and Rapetosaurus, have nearly complete skulls.
We do have some amazing information about their life cycles. Titanosaurs are one of the few dinosaur groups with known fossil eggs. The Auca Mahuevo site is a famous titanosaur nesting ground.
