Oberon is the second-largest moon of Uranus. The name Titania comes from a character in a play by William Shakespeare. She is the queen of the fairies in "A Midsummer Night's Dream." Later, John Herschel suggested the names for the moons in 1852. These names were inspired by the works of Shakespeare and Alexander Pope.

Titania has many unique features on its surface. It has many impact craters from rocks hitting it in space. The largest crater is named Gertrude and is 326 kilometers wide.

Titania's surface is shaped by both external impacts and internal activity. It is covered in impact craters caused by objects hitting the surface. The largest known crater is named Gertrude, and it is 326 kilometers wide. However, Titania is less heavily cratered than its neighbor, Oberon. This suggests the surface may be younger due to an early endogenic resurfacing event. Endogenic processes are geological activities that come from inside the moon. This internal activity may have obliterated older, heavily cratered surfaces. The surface is also cut by massive geological features like scarps and canyons.

One of the most striking features is the system of enormous canyons called chasmata. These canyons are formed by grabens, which are depressions in the crust between two parallel faults. The most prominent canyon is Messina Chasma. It stretches from the equator almost to the south pole. These grabens can have a relief of 2 to 5 kilometers. Scientists believe these massive cracks resulted from the expansion of the moon's interior. As the interior grew during later stages of evolution, the crust broke apart. We know much of this through the history of astronomical discovery. William Herschel discovered Titania on January 11, 1787. He discovered it on the same day he found Oberon. This suggests Titania might have a very thin atmosphere. The surface pressure is estimated to be very low, around 10 nanopascals. We have only seen the moon up close once. The Voyager 2 spacecraft flew past Titania in January 1986. This mission mapped about 40% of the moon's surface.
