He was also a priest in the Mercedarian order. He was born in Madrid to Andrés López and Juana Téllez. His life was full of different roles and duties. He was a poet, a dramatist, and a religious leader. People remember him today as one of Spain's greatest playwrights. His stories have stayed important for hundreds of years.

Writing was a huge part of his life. He wrote many different kinds of things. These included plays, poems, and short tales called novellas. He also wrote books about history and religion. Some of his plays were comedies with clever jokes. Others were called morality plays that taught lessons. He even wrote historical stories about famous queens. His work showed great wit and cleverness.

His journey into writing and religion began early. He studied at the University of Alcalá as a young man. On November 4, 1600, he joined the Order of Our Lady of Mercy. He spent time at the Monastery of San Antolín in Guadalajara. By 1610, he was known as a priest. In 1615, his leaders sent him on a mission. He lived in Santo Domingo from 1616 to 1618. After that, he returned to Europe to write more.

Tirso was a very productive writer. He claimed to have written three hundred plays by 1621. Some sources say he wrote four hundred plays in twenty years. However, only about eighty of his plays still exist today. He published many volumes of his work. Some were published under his own name. Others used the name of his nephew, Francisco Lucas de Ávila. This might have helped him avoid trouble with leaders.

Not everyone liked his bold style of writing. Some people thought his plays were bad for public morals. In 1625, they even complained to the Council of Castile. Because of this, he moved to Salamanca in 1626. He spent much of his later life serving his order. He worked as a prior and an official archivist. He died in the city of Soria in 1648. His famous character Don Juan still lives on in theater today.
