He lived during a time of great music. He was most famous for writing librettos. A libretto provides the words for an opera. These words help singers tell a story. Sterbini worked hard to make his stories special. He wanted the words to match the music perfectly. This skill made him a very important person in the world of opera.

Writing a libretto is a very careful job. Sterbini had to understand many different things. He knew a lot about culture and philosophy. He also studied linguistics, which is the study of language. He was fluent in five different languages. These were Greek, Latin, Italian, French, and German. He used this deep knowledge to write his scripts. He even set poetry to music as an amateur hobby.

Sterbini's life began in 1784. He lived in a place called the Papal States. He also worked as an official in the Pontifical Administration. This was a large and important office. He spent many years writing for famous composers. He wrote the words for Torvaldo e Dorliska in 1815. This work was for the composer Gioachino Rossini. It was a type of story called a dramma semiserio.

Many of his works are still known today. He wrote the words for The Barber of Seville in 1816. This was an opera buffa, which is a funny opera. This story was also written for Gioachino Rossini. Sterbini wrote Il Contraccambio for Giacomo Cordella in 1819. He also wrote Isaura e Ricciardo for Francesco Basili in 1820. These stories were often called dramma giocoso. This means they were funny plays with music.

His influence lasted long after he was gone. Even after he died in Rome in 1831, people used his words. For example, many composers used his Barber of Seville text. Costantino Dall'Argine used it in 1868. Giuseppe Graffigna used it in 1879. Alberto Torazza used it in 1924. His words helped many different musicians create new music. Sterbini's life shows how words and music work together.
