He was born in 1746 on a large farm called Fazenda do Pombal. His early life was difficult after his parents died. He worked many different jobs to get by. He was a miner, a peddler, and a pharmacy partner.

Tiradentes held many roles throughout his life. He used his skills with minerals to work as a terrain surveyor. He also joined the Minas Gerais Dragoon Regiment as a soldier. In this role, he reached the rank of alferes. This was the lowest officer rank at that time. He traveled along a road called Caminho Novo. This path connected Vila Rica to the coast at Rio de Janeiro. He saw much gold being moved along this road. Most of this gold was sent away to Portugal.

His travels helped him form new political ideas. He saw how much wealth left Brazil for Portugal. He felt this was a way of exploitation. He also met people who had lived in Europe. These people brought new ideas about freedom to Brazil. In 1788, he met a man who had just returned from England. Together, they decided to plan for a new future. They wanted Brazil to be an independent republic. They hoped to make Vila Rica a town for a university.

The group was called the Inconfidência Mineira. They wanted to start their republic in February 1789. They chose this time because taxes were due to Portugal. This was called the derrama, which was a heavy tax. The group even designed a special flag. It had a green triangle on a white background. It also had a Latin motto about freedom. However, a man named Joaquim Silvério dos Reis told the authorities about the plan. He did this to get his own taxes forgiven.

Tiradentes was arrested and faced a long trial. He took full responsibility for the movement. In 1792, he was sentenced to death and was hanged. Many other members of the group were also punished. After his death, the people of Brazil began to see him differently. In 1889, when Brazil became a republic, he became a national hero. Today, his name is used for many things. There is a city named Tiradentes in Minas Gerais. His face is even shown on a 5 centavo coin.
