He is most commonly remembered by the name Tiradentes. This name is a pejorative term meaning "tooth puller" in Portuguese. He earned this nickname through his work in dentistry and pharmaceutical practices. He also possessed knowledge of medicinal plants. This expertise came from his cousin, the celebrated botanist Brother José Mariano da Conceição Veloso.

Tiradentes was born in 1746 on the Fazenda do Pombal. This large farm was located near the village of Santa Rita do Rio Abaixo. At that time, the area was disputed territory between São João del-Rei and Tiradentes. His family was part of the local mining economy. A 1757 inventory of the farm showed the family owned 35 slaves. The inventory also listed a large quantity of valuable mining equipment. However, his life changed after the deaths of his parents. His family lost their property due to debt, and he received no regular education. He instead studied under his uncle, a dentist.

His professional life was diverse and spanned several different roles. He worked as a peddler and a miner before becoming a partner in a pharmacy in Vila Rica. Because of his mineral knowledge, he also served as a terrain surveyor. He later joined the Minas Gerais Dragoon Regiment as a soldier. He held the rank of alferes, which was the lowest officer rank at the time.

During his service, he commanded a detachment along the Caminho Novo. This road connected Vila Rica to Rio de Janeiro. He used this route to transport gold to the coast for shipment to Portugal.

Witnessing the transit of goods along the Caminho Novo shaped his political views. He observed the massive exportation of gold and valuable resources to the Portuguese metropolis. Tiradentes began to view this constant flow of wealth as exploitation. He also faced personal frustration regarding his military career. As a man not belonging to the local aristocracy, he was systematically overlooked for promotions. He was eventually dismissed from his commanding post. These experiences led him toward revolutionary thinking.

In 1788, Tiradentes began organizing a group of freedom aspirants. He met a man who had recently returned from England. This contact helped bring liberal ideas from Europe to Brazil. The group was known as the Inconfidência Mineira. It included prominent figures like Cláudio Manuel da Costa and Tomás Antônio Gonzaga. They were inspired by the American Revolution and the writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

Their goal was to establish an independent Brazilian republic. They planned to make São João del Rei the capital. They also wanted to turn Vila Rica into a university town.

The movement faced a major crisis due to declining gold productivity. The Brazilian mines were failing to meet the quinto, which was the gold quota demanded by the Portuguese Crown. To collect more, the authorities planned the derrama. This was a heavily confiscatory tribute that caused great anger among the colonists.

The conspirators planned to proclaim the republic in February 1789. They chose this date to coincide with the scheduled derrama. They even designed a flag with a green triangle on a white background. It featured the Latin motto "Libertas Quae Sera Tamen," meaning "Freedom, Even If It Be Late."

The plot was ultimately betrayed by a conspirator named Joaquim Silvério dos Reis. He exposed the group to the authorities in exchange for a tax waiver. The governor of Minas Gerais cancelled the derrama and arrested the rebels. A trial lasted almost three years. While Queen Maria I of Portugal eventually commuted most death sentences to perpetual banishment, Tiradentes was treated differently. Because he took full responsibility for the movement, he was sentenced to death.

He was hanged on 21 April 1792.

Following his execution, his body was quartered. The pieces were sent to Vila Rica to be displayed in public places. This was intended to discourage others from spreading liberal ideas. Despite this, Tiradentes became a powerful symbol for the Brazilian people. After the establishment of the Republic in 1889, he was recognized as a national hero. The anniversary of his death is now a national holiday in Brazil.
