It is the southernmost canton, or state, in the Swiss Confederation. While most of Switzerland sits on a high plateau, Ticino lies almost entirely south of the big Alps mountains. It shares borders with the Italian countries of Piedmont and Lombardy.

The canton is also near other Swiss areas like Valais, Uri, and Grisons. Because it sits south of the mountains, it has a very different feel than the rest of the country. It is the only canton where Italian is the only official language.

A large river called the Ticino flows through the land. This river travels from the mountains to Lake Maggiore. It gave the canton its name long ago.

History shows that many different groups lived here.

Long ago, a Celtic tribe called the Lepontii lived in these valleys. Later, the Roman Empire ruled the area. After the Romans, groups like the Lombards and Franks also held the land. In the 1400s and 1500s, Swiss forces won the land from Italian cities.

By 1803, the modern canton of Ticino was officially formed. Before they used the Swiss franc, they even had their own money called the Ticinese franco.
