Tianxia

philosophy religion Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Tianxia is an old Chinese idea. It means "all under heaven."

This term can mean the whole world. It can also mean all land and sea. In ancient China, people thought the world had a center. They believed the Chinese court was that center. The world spread out from the court in circles. The center held the court. Then came officials. Next were common people. Then came other states. Finally, there were people on the edges.

Many people believe this system helped keep order. Some thinkers say it is about peace. They say leaders should use virtue. This means being kind and good. Leaders should win hearts instead of using force. This helps different groups live together in harmony.

This idea changed over many years. During the Han dynasty, it helped spread Chinese culture. Later, the idea began to fade. This happened after wars with Great Britain in the 1800s. Now, some scholars still study it. They wonder if it can help the world today. They talk about how big powers should act toward others.
