Thunderbolt (interface)

Thunderbolt is a special hardware interface used to connect tools to a computer.

It was created by Intel and Apple working together. This technology helps computers talk to external devices like monitors or storage drives. It is very useful because it handles many tasks at once.

One big job it does is sending power through the cable too. This means you can power a device while you send it data. It makes connecting your computer to your workspace much simpler.

How does this connection work so well?

It works by combining two different signals into one single cable. It takes PCIe, which is used for data, and DisplayPort, which is used for video. A controller inside the computer takes these signals and puts them together. This is called multiplexing. On the other end, the controller takes them apart again. This is called de-multiplexing. You can also connect up to six devices in a row. This setup is known as a daisy chain.

Scientists and engineers spent a long time developing this idea.

It was first called Light Peak. At first, Intel wanted to use light and glass fibers to move data. This was part of a project at the Silicon Photonics lab. However, they later found that copper wires worked just as well. Using copper was much cheaper for everyone. The first products using this technology were sold on 24 February 2011. They were part of the new MacBook Pro computers.

There are many different versions of Thunderbolt with different speeds.

Thunderbolt 1 and 2 used a connector called Mini DisplayPort. Thunderbolt 1 had a speed of 10 Gbit/s. In 2013, Thunderbolt 2 arrived with a speed of 20 Gbit/s. This newer version could even run a 4K video monitor. Later, Thunderbolt 3, 4, and 5 switched to the USB-C connector. Thunderbolt 3 is very fast and can reach 40 Gbit/s. This speed lets it run two 4K displays at the same time.

You can think of Thunderbolt like a very wide highway.

A normal cable might only have one lane for cars. Thunderbolt adds many lanes so video and data can travel together. This prevents a traffic jam when you use big files. It is similar to how a single power cord can run a whole desk. You can plug a dock into your computer to add many ports. This makes your computer much more powerful for big jobs.
