It is a tiny plug with 24 pins inside. This connector is much better than the older ones we used to call legacy. It can replace many different kinds of cables. You might use it for things like HDMI or DisplayPort. It even replaces the old headphone jacks. This makes it a very important tool for our digital world.

This plug works in a very clever way. It is reversible, which means it has two-fold rotational symmetry. You do not have to worry about which side is up. You can plug it in any way you like. Even though the plug looks the same on both sides, the pins are not actually symmetric. Software inside the devices helps them act like they are the same. A special part called a Configuration Channel helps the devices talk to each other. This tells them which way the cable is facing.

Many smart companies helped create this design. Apple Inc. started developing it in 2012. They worked with Intel, HP Inc., and Microsoft. The USB Implementers Forum also helped with the work. The official rules for the plug came out on August 11, 2014. Later, in 2016, it was adopted by the IEC. Since then, many big brands like Samsung have used it. It is now a standard way to connect almost everything.

USB-C can do many different jobs at once. It can send data to a mouse or a keyboard. It can also send video to a big screen. Some cables are very fast at moving data. For example, USB 3.2 can move data at 20 Gbit/s. There are even cables that can move 40 Gbps of data. These cables can also carry a lot of electricity. Some can provide up to 240 W of power. This is enough to charge large devices quickly.

Think of USB-C like a universal key. In the past, you needed many different keys for different locks. You needed one for power and another for video. Now, one single plug can do almost everything. Some cables even have tiny computer chips called E-Markers inside. These chips tell the devices exactly what the cable can do. This helps everything stay safe while it works. It makes using our gadgets much simpler and easier.
