Thrust reversal

technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

When a large airplane lands on a runway, it must slow down quickly. One way it does this is through thrust reversal. This is a way of using the engines to help the plane stop.

It works by changing the direction of the engine's exhaust. Instead of blowing air straight out the back, the air is turned partially forward. This creates a force that acts against the motion of the plane. Using this method helps the wheel brakes do their job. It also reduces the wear and tear on those brakes.

Thrust reversal works in a few different ways depending on the engine. In a target-type system, two doors called buckets or clamshells are used. These doors are moved by hydraulics to block the hot exhaust. They then redirect that flow toward the front of the plane.

Another way is the internal type. This uses doors inside the engine to send air out of the sides. Some large engines use a cold-stream system. This only redirects the air from the large fan section.

The engine's core still pushes the plane forward in this design.

Different planes use these systems in different ways. For example, the four-engined Airbus A380 only needs reversers on two engines. The three-engined Dassault Falcon only uses it on the center engine.

Some military planes like the Tornado and Viggen use it too. The Tornado can land on a runway that is only 900 meters long. The Saab 37 Viggen can use a landing strip of just 500 meters. These short paths might even be straight sections of a road.

Pilots must follow specific steps to use thrust reversal safely. They usually apply it immediately after the plane touches the runway. This helps slow the plane down while it is still going fast. As the plane gets slower, the pilot must cancel the reverse thrust. If they do not, the forward-moving air could suck debris into the engine. This could cause what is called foreign object damage.

Sometimes, pilots use it to move the plane backward away from a gate. This special move is called a powerback.

Propeller planes have their own way of doing this. They use variable-pitch propellers to change the angle of the blades. When the blades move to a negative angle, it is called the beta position.

This change in angle directs the thrust forward to help the plane stop. Most large aircraft weighing more than 12,500 pounds have this ability. It is a very helpful tool for landing on slippery or snowy runways. It keeps the flight safe and helps the plane stay under control.
